The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes is a collection of Sherlock Holmes stories, originally published in 1894 by Arthur Conan Doyle. In the American edition there are eleven stories, while in others there are twelve. All these stories appeared in the Strand Magazine. The first story, “Silver Blaze” is about the disappearance of a famous race horse on the eve of an important race and on the apparent murder of its trainer. The “Adventure of the Yellow Face” is one of Doyle’s sentimental pieces. The plot of the story, “The Adventure of the Stockbroker’s Clerk” is reminiscent of that in “The Red-Headed League”, as it also involves an elaborate hoax designed to remove an inconvenient person from the scene. The story “The Adventure of the Gloria Scott” is chronologically the earliest case in Sherlock Holmes canon, and is the first case to which Holmes applied his power of deduction. “The Adventure of the Musgrave Ritual” shares elements with two tales of Elgar Allan Poe, “The Gold Bug” and “The Cask of Amontillado.” The story “The Adventure of Resident Patient” is about an unusual problem brought by Dr. Percy Travelyan to Holmes.
