The Mill on the Floss is a classic novel by George Eliot, telling the semi-autobiographical story of the author through the lives of Tom and Maggie Tulliver. Summary of the Book Maggie Tulliver and her brother Tom live with their parents in Dorlcote Mill on the River Floss at its junction with the more minor River Ripple near the village of St. Ogg's in Lincolnshire, England. Maggie wishes to capture her father’s unconditional love before his death. Tom, on the other hand, is pragmatic and reserved. He clashes with Maggie for intellectual gains and experience. Their family falls to bankruptcy and soon, their father’s death brings them closer. Tom enters a business and achieves some success.Maggie suffers in their home, her intelligence is wasted away and she soon reaches out to spirituality to find some meaning. A coming-of-age novel, their fortunes and misfortunes form the rest of the novel.
