The Naxalite movement is one of the most important components of India’s political spectrum. It caused tremors in the country, posing a serious challenge to democratic structure. Idealists saw it as the beginning of a new world, a new socio-economic order. But sordid politics soon caused the movement to stagnate. It still continues, however, to have a large support based because of the intellectual appeal of its ideology, having survived more than a quarter-century of onslaught from the country’s security forces without any external support. About the Author Prakash Singh is a distinguished officer of the Indian Police Service. He is the former police chief of Uttar Pradesh, and former commander of the largest parliamentary force in the world, the border security force. He contributed to combating the insurgency in Nagaland and stemming the tide of terrorism in the Punjab. He also served in Kashmir and led the Assam Police in its fight against the ULFA. The Government of India, in recognition of his outstanding services to national security, awarded him the ‘Padma Shree’ in 1991.
