About the Author Veera Hiranandani is a writer whose book, The Night Diary, received the 2019 Newberry Honor Award, the 2019 Walter Dean Myers Honor Award, and the 2018 Malka Penn Award. The Night Diary has also been chosen as the Best Children’s Book of the Year (2018) by The New York Times. Hiranandani grew up in a small town in Connecticut. Her father is an Indian and her mother is Jewish-American. Hiranandani says that her cross-cultural upbringing made her stronger as a person. She completed her MFA in fiction writing at Sarah Lawrence College. Besides working on her next novel, she is also teaching creative writing at Sarah Lawrence College’s Writing Institute. Through this journey, we uncover Nisha’s love for her homeland, her identity, and her hopefulness about a better future.
