The Origin of Species is the classic book on Charles Darwin’s Theory of Natural Selection. Summary of the Book In 1859, the world was primed for a chaotic change. Charles Darwin published a work entitled: On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life. This treatise directly challenged all theories of Divine Creation, explaining that mankind, and the variety and interconnectivity of all life on Earth, may be explained by the idea that life constantly changes to survive. He explained that the diversity of life came about through a continuous change in life all over the Earth. He called this phenomenon evolution by natural selection and offered myriad examples to prove it. In writing this book, he set off a wave of change which has led to the formation of several fields of science including genetics, biotechnology and evolutionary theory. About Charles Darwin Charles Darwin was a nineteenth century English naturalist and writer, best known for proposing the Evolutionary Theory. He also wrote The Descent of Man. In 1831, Darwin journeyed with Captain Robert FitzRoy, aboard the H.M.S. Beagle, and on this journey observed many species of life, slowly building his theory that all life evolved from common ancestors. He collaborated with Alfred Russel Wallace for joint publication of their theories, and proposed the theory he went on to call Natural Selection.
