About Nikolai Gogol Nikolai Gogol, born in 1809, was a novelist, dramatist, and short story writer. He was a Russian born in present day Ukraine. His first publication was a volume of Ukrainian stories, published in 1831. This was followed by two other volumes. The first part of the trilogy Dead Souls was published in 1842, under the title The Adventures of Chichikov. This book established Gogol as the greatest prose writer of the Russian language in the 19th century. Some of this other literary works include Taras Bul'ba, Diary of a Madman, and The Inspector-General. Over thirty-five movies have been based on the author’s work. He himself has been featured on USSR and Russian postage stamps numerous times. Commemorative coins have also been issued in his name. Nikolai Gogol passed away in 1852, at the age of 42.
