The pilgrims described in The Canterbury Tales are vivid and convincing and clear-cut individuals. The Pardoner is depicted as a comic, contemptible, unscrupulous and cunning rogue. And in The Prologue to his Tale he reveals his motives and methods of duping simple God-fearing people. He is a first-rate story-teller. Behind all this lies Geoffrey Chaucer’s superb power of characterisation and art of story-telling.
