The Pearl is the story of a man named Kino who finds a pearl that people call “the Pearl of the world”. However, it is this pearl that brings about his evil side, greed and eventual downfall. Summary of the Book A scorpion has stung Kino’s son, Coyotito, and he is desperate to save his child. When he goes to the doctor, he is denied medical services because he has no money. Infuriated, he decides to sell an enormous pearl that he has found. Everyone says it is "the Pearl of the World" and try to get their hands on it. Their greed for the pearl goes to the extent that Kino is attacked in his own home. He decides to sell it at the auction where the corrupt buyers try to tell Kino that the pearl is not worth much. They offer to pay him very little money and Kino leaves for the capital for a better bargain. Juana, Kino’s wife, is concerned as she sees that the pearl brings darkness and greed in Kino and the people around them. She sneaks out one night to throw the pearl back into the ocean, but is attacked by a furious Kino. This is followed by incidents that prove to the family the dangers of keeping the pearl. Will Kino understand what the precious pearl is doing to him before damage is done to him and his family? About John Steinbeck John Steinbeck was an American author who had authored twenty-seven books. He is widely known for his book The Grapes of Wrath that won a Pulitzer Prize. He has also written East of Eden and Of Mice and Men. In 1962, he received the Nobel Prize for Literature.
