Summary of the Book The story of The Piano Teacher is set in Hong Kong in the mid-twentieth century, when the place was still a British territory. Will Truesdale and Trudy Liang fall deeply in love with each other, but they are separated by the Second World War, when Japan invades Hong Kong. Will ends up in an internment camp and Trudy is compelled to become a tutor and an unwilling mistress to a man who rules Hong Kong. After a decade or so, Claire Pendleton is hired by a wealthy Chinese family to give piano lessons to their ten-year-old daughter, Locket. She begins a love affair with the family’s driver, Will, who is now unaware of his former lover! The novel intricately brings out the revelations of betrayals, secrets, and human behaviour during war-time, through its characters that will linger on in your mind for a long time. About Janice Y. K. Lee Janice Y. K. Lee was born in Hong Kong. She earned a degree in English and American Literature and Language and started her career at Elle magazine, as an assistant to the beauty editor. A mother of two, Janice currently lives in Hong Kong. The Piano Teacher is her debut novel.
