This book highlights the many deprivations and disadvantages of the poor in India. It attempts to analyze the contemporary events of socio-political interest in India which have a bearing on the continued poverty status of the majority of its population. Over the last six decades, while India GDP has gone up and there has been much interaction on the global front, internally poverty in India has not changed to any degree of satisfaction. For, the Indian governance is the quixotic combination of feudalism and democracy overseen by political lords whose attitudes and feudal ethos have not changed much. The current condition of the poor is a matter of concern as it adversely affects the making of the future generation in India. Therefore, this book indicates the necessity for a change in the attitudes of the rulers and argues for utilization of a pattern of interaction with the poor which is at one and the same time responsive, proactive and transparent so that the majority can see and participate in the programme activities directed towards their welfare.
