The Prince or De Principatibus is one of the earliest books on Political Philosophy, and it was written by medieval Italian political theorist and diplomat Niccolo Machiavelli. The book’s influence and impact led to the creation of the word ‘Machiavellian’ which means a set of political traits corresponding to the philosophy discussed in the book. Although it was published 1532, five years after Machiavelli’s death, the book was immensely popular as it challenged power structures of the Catholic Church prevalent during the time. The ethics in politics and emphasis on effectual truth instead of abstract moral ideals have made the book a topic of debate for centuries to this day.
