Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love And High Adventure is set in the Renaissance-era in the year 1941. It is the story of a young and beautiful woman named Buttercup, who lives on a farm and torments the farm boy, Westley, by ordering him to run errands for her. Westley obeys her dutifully each time. Over time, she realizes that he is in love with her. Not before long, she too falls in love with him and confesses her true feelings to him. Soon, Westley leaves the farm to seek his fortune so that he would be in a position to marry her. After he leaves, Buttercup receives the tragic news that Westley was killed by a pirate aboard the ship he was travelling in. Hearing this, she sinks into despair announcing that she would never love anyone again. However, she is forced to agree to marry Prince Humperdinck due to a law that allows the prince to pick any spinster in the kingdom to be his bride. Just before the wedding, a band of outlaws kidnap Buttercup. They are followed by a masked man in black. The outlaws try hard to fend off the man in black, but he is successful in rescuing Buttercup from their clutches. While fleeing with her, the man taunts her saying that women are not trustworthy and that she must have felt indifferent when her true love had died. This angers her and she pushes him into a gorge hoping that he dies too. From the gorge down below, the man in black yells back at her. Buttercup then realizes that the man is not anyone else but her love, Westley. Who had organized the kidnapping of Buttercup?
