The Prophet is a compilation of twenty six prose-poetry pieces by the author, and it is his most well known publication. Summary Of The Book The Prophet begins with Almustafa (the Prophet) on the way to board a ship that will take him home after twelve long years in Orphalese, a foreign city. However, he is accosted by a gathering of people, and he stops to discuss with them topics such as life, human behavior and death. The subjects that are eulogised in The Prophet are those that every human being can connect with. They are an everyday occurrence and are familiar to people from all strata of society. Among other things, love, marriage, prayer, freedom, pleasure, beauty, death, religion and pain are spoken of. Each of these topics is a separate piece in itself, and there are twenty six pieces in all. Kahlil Gibran writes with great vigour on sensitive topics such as love and religion, using powerful imagery to get his meaning across. The different chapters are filled with poetic meaning, with a spiritual perspective. The Prophet incessantly advocates the finding of spiritual divinity through love. Using a combination of Eastern mystic aphorisms and religious philosophy, Gibran’s The Prophet was tantamount to the word of God in the 1960s, and is even acknowledged as one of the leading influences that spawned the New Age movement. This is one of the bestselling books in the world, with over a hundred million copies having been sold worldwide since its first publication in 1923. About Kahlil Gibran Kahlil Gibran was a philosopher, poet, writer and artist. The author was born in 1883 in a town known as Bsharri, which is now part of Lebanon. Although Gibran had no formal education owing to the impoverished state of his family, priests would visit his house often and educate him on the Bible, apart from teaching him the Arabic and Syriac languages. GIbran’s father was arrested for embezzlement when he was working in the capacity of the officer to a local administrator. After this, Gibran’s mother decided to accompany her brother to New York, along with GIbran and his siblings. It was in New York that Kahlil Gibran developed his taste for both art and poetry, then returning to Lebanon to study his home culture. Kahlil Gibran is the third best selling poet in history, after Shakespeare and Lao-Tzu.
