Khalil Gibran's The Prophet is his most celebrated work and brings readers the mystic prose poetry essays of the Lebanese writer. Summary of the Book Known as the book which has never gone out of print even once since its publication, this book incorporates the story of the Prophet, Almustafa, who has been living in the foreign city of Orphalese for 12 years. He is about to board a ship to return home, but is stopped by a group of people. He begins discussing everything with them, beginning with life and the human condition and progressing to touch upon love, marriage, children, giving, eating and drinking, work, joy and sorrow, houses, clothes, buying and selling, crime and punishment, laws, freedom, reason and passion, pain, self-knowledge, teaching, friendship, talking, time, good and evil, prayer, pleasure, beauty, religion, and death. The poems are patterned after Nostradamus's quatrains, and celebrate love in all its forms, dealing frequently with Christian themes and spiritual love. Merging Islam, Sufism and Judaism into the fray, he celebrates mysticism of all forms.
