Summary of the book Three children and their mother move to a simple cottage near a railway station following their father’s sudden imprisonment. The children do not understand why their father had to be taken away, but they soon get used to their simple life by the station. From the “Old Gentleman” to a Russian exile, the children come across several strangers and some regulars who board trains at the station and have adventures to keep themselves busy. In doing so, they come closer and closer to discovering the truth behind their father’s unjust imprisonment. A heart-warming story of the family life and the meaning of human spirit, this is a tale for children of all ages. About E. Nesbit Edith Nesbit was an English writer and poet. She is best remembered for writing several children’s series, including: the Bastable series, the Psammead series and the House of Arden series. This book was adapted into a film in 1970 starring Dinah Sheridan, Bernard Cribbins and William Mervyn. It was directed by Lionel Jeffries. It was also adapted into a television series four times by the BBC.
