This work sets out to provide a critique and account of the development of the new realist philosophy of social science as it is specifically applied to sociology and social psychology. The author attempts to confront the problems and ambiguities which exist in the programme as it now stands. Derek Layder has also written "Structure, Interaction and Social Theory".
