Born in New York City, Kaplan graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1973. He is currently a foreign correspondent for The Atlantic, in addition to being the Chief Geo-political Analyst for Stratfor. Kaplan was also appointed to the Pentagon’s Defense Policy Board in 2009, and worked in that capacity for a couple of years.
