The Road is a post-apocalyptic story of a father and his young son as they try to survive and make their way through a world destroyed by an unnamed catastrophe. Summary of the Book In the months that followed the apocalypse, a father takes his young son south, through empty roads to try and find a way to survive. Their meagre possessions are in the knapsacks and the supermarket cart they take with them. The father fears that they will fall into the hands of cannibals, for most of the survivors have resorted to the barbaric act because of hunger. The land is covered with ash and has no living animals or plants. They carry a pistol with 2 bullets, and the father instructs the son to use it on himself if he falls into the hands of cannibals. They follow the road, not knowing where it leads and not knowing if they are truly alone. About Cormac McCarthy Cormac McCarthy is an American novelist, screenwriter and playwright who is best known for his novels which feature the Southern Gothic, Western, and post-apocalyptic genres. He has also written: No Country For Old Men, All The Pretty Horses, Child of God, Blood Meridian, and Suttree. A highly-acclaimed writer, Cormac won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, the 2008 Premio Ignotus, and was listed for the 2008 IMPAC Award for The Road. Several of his books have been adapted into movies. The Road was adapted into a major motion picture by John Hillcoat and starred Viggo Mortensen and Kodi Smit-McPhee.
