The Road is Cormac McCarthy’s dystopian tale of a father and his son as they make their way through a desolate America. Summary of the Book In the wake of a terrible apocalypse, humanity is left crippled. There are few survivors, and civilization stands still. A man walks along a road with his son, searching for help. However, they find none wherever they go, and they only have each other as they go along. Several lawless bands plague the desolate streets, scavenging for scraps of food and other resources. The man and his son have little by way of food or clothing, and the only protection they have is a pistol. The road is a cesspool of debris from the apocalypse, and the man tries his best to keep his son’s spirits up. However, he grapples with the knowledge that they may never find help and their only recourse might be the one pistol they have: to protect them, or to lead them to a better place.
