"The Rover" is set in the south of France during the aftermath of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. The novel follows the story of Peyrol, an aging former privateer (a "rover") who has spent much of his life at sea. After years of adventurous and often morally ambiguous exploits, Peyrol seeks peace and retirement in a remote farmhouse near Toulon.
