About the book:- Translated from Sanskrit into Chinese by Dharmaraksha, A.D. 420 and from Chinese into English by Beal. The Sacred Books of the East series. The volume from the Buddhist literature of China, I Undertook, With some distrust to translated from that language phu-yau-king, which is the second version of the Lalita Vistara known in China and dated A. D. 308. The editor being still desirous to have one book at least from the Chinese Tripitaka in his collection of translations (and more especially a translation of some life of Buddha, that date of which could be fixed) kindly renewed his request and proposed that the Fo-sho-hing-tsan-king, which professed to be a translation of Asvaghosha’s Buddhakarita, made by an Indian priest called Dharmaraksha ( or Dharmakshara) about the year 420 A. D., should be substituted for the work first selected. About the author:-Friedrich Max Müller (1823 –1900) was a German-born philologist and Orientalist, who lived and studied in Britain for most of his life. He was one of the founders of the western academic disciplines of Indian studies and religious studies ('science of religion', German: Religionswissenschaft). Müller wrote both scholarly and popular works on the subject of Indology. The Sacred Books of the East, a 50-volume set of English translations, was prepared under his direction. Samuel Beal (1825--1889) was an Oriental scholar, and the first Englishman to translate directly from the Chinese the early records of Buddhism, thus illuminating Indian history. From 1848 to 1850 he was headmaster of Bramham College, Yorkshire. He was ordained deacon in 1850, and priest in the following year. In September 1872 he was appointed to examine the Buddhist Chinese books in the India Office Library, London. Of the Chinese language books held by the library, Beal found 72 Buddhist compilations across 112 volumes. His research illustrated key philosophical differences between Indian and Chinese Buddhism. His reputation was established by his series of works which traced the travels of the Chinese Buddhists in India from the fifth to the seventh centuries AD, and by his books on Buddhism, which have become classics.
