About the Book:-The work of which a translation is here for the first time presented to the English reading public, has had a strange and interesting history. Written in Northern India, at or a little after the beginning of the Christian era, and either in Sanskrit itself or in some North Indian Prakrit, it has been entirely lost in the land of its origin and (so far as is at present known) is not extant in any of the homes of the various sects and schools of the Buddhists except only in Ceylon and in those countries which have derived their Buddhism from Ceylon. It is true that General Cunningham says that the name of Milinda is still famous in all Buddhist countries.’ But he is here drawing a very wide conclusion from an isolated fact. About the Author:-Friedrich Max Müller (1823 –1900) was a German-born philologist and Orientalist, who lived and studied in Britain for most of his life. He was one of the founders of the western academic disciplines of Indian studies and religious studies ('science of religion', German: Religionswissenschaft). Müller wrote both scholarly and popular works on the subject of Indology. The Sacred Books of the East, a 50-volume set of English translations, was prepared under his direction. Thomas William Rhys Davids (1843 –1922) was an English scholar of the Pali language and founder of the Pali Text Society. He took an active part in founding the British Academy and London School for Oriental Studies. He was born at Colchester in Essex, England, the eldest son of a Congregational clergyman from Wales, who was affectionately referred to as the Bishop of Essex. His mother, who died at the age of 37 following childbirth, had run the Sunday school at his father's church. In 1894 Rhys Davids married Caroline Augusta Foley, a noted Pāli scholar. Unlike his wife, however, Rhys Davids was a critic and opponent of Theosophy. They had three children. In 1871 he was posted as Assistant Government Agent of Nuwarakalaviya, where Anuradhapura was the administrative centre. The governor was Sir Hercules Robinson, who had founded the Archaeological Commission in 1868.
