About the Book:-The present volume completes the exposition of the agnikayana or construction of sacred Fire-altar. Whilst to the general reader the section of the Brahmana treating of this ceremony and extending over no less than five of its fourteen Kandas or rather more than one third of the whole will probably appear the least inviting part of the work a special interest attaches to this ceremony and the dogmatic explanation of its details for the student of Indian antiquity. The complicated ritual of the Fire-alter as has been pointed out before does not seem to have formed part of the original sacrificial system but was probably developed independently of it. About the Author:-Friedrich Max Müller (1823 –1900) was a German-born philologist and Orientalist, who lived and studied in Britain for most of his life. He was one of the founders of the western academic disciplines of Indian studies and religious studies ('science of religion', German: Religionswissenschaft). Müller wrote both scholarly and popular works on the subject of Indology. The Sacred Books of the East, a 50-volume set of English translations, was prepared under his direction. Heinrich Julius Eggeling (1842–1918) was Professor of Sanskrit at the University of Edinburgh from 1875 to 1914, second holder of its Regius Chair of Sanskrit, and Secretary of the Royal Asiatic Society, London. Eggeling was translator and editor of the Satapatha Brahmana in 5 volumes of the monumental Sacred Books of the East series edited by Max Müller, author of the main article on Sanskrit in the Encyclopedia Britannica, and curator of the University Library from 1900 to 1913. In August 1914 he left for a vacation in his native Germany, but because of World War I, he was unable to return before his death in 1918. He lived on Brunstane Road in Joppa, Edinburgh.
