Morpheus, the Lord of Dreams, must journey to Hell to rescue the lover he damned for all eternity in Volume Four of The Sandman,Season of Mists. Summary of the Book The Endless family meets to discuss something that has been on their minds for a long time. Desire brings up Morpheus's intolerant treatment of a former lover and Death agrees with him, telling her young brother that what he did was wrong. Morpheus's respect for Death leads him to agree with her and he soon travels to Hell to rescue Nada from the doom he damned her to. however, Lucifer, the Lord of Hell, is still angry over Morpheus's treatment of him the last time Dream entered Hell, and he will do everything to repay him. To Dream's surprise though, Lucifer is closing shop and locking down all of Hell for some mysterious reason. He hands over the keys to Hell to Morpheus and now Dream must decide what to do with the rather troublesome land. He has no wish to care for the souls of the damned, but he cannot hand it over to just anyone. There are many contenders for the role of the Lord of Hell, including Odin, Loki, Thor, Anubis, Bast, Bes, Susano-o-no-Mikoto and Azazel among them. Morpheus must choose the successor, and his choice may change everything.
