Tom Butler-Bowdon, a personal development scholar, includes The Science of Getting Rich in his 50 Success Classics list. About Wallace D. Wattles Wallace D. Wattles was a bestselling author, who hailed from Illinois. Wattles also authored Making of the Man Who Can, The Science of Being Great, Health Through New Thought and Fasting, and Jesus: The Man and His Work. Wattles had very little formal education. He was employed as a farm hand. After meeting George Davis Herron, a preacher of Christian Socialism, Wattles became a social visionary. He ran for public office as a Socialist, but lost both times. Wattles was also a part of the New Thought movement. Through his books, he encouraged readers to follow his theories based on the premise that he had tested them himself. Wattles was married to Abbie Walters, and together they had three children. Wattles died on February 7, 1911.
