The Sea, The Sea is the Booker Prize-winning novel written by Iris Murdoch. Summary of the Book A self-satisfied playwright and director is haunted by bizarre obsessions as he starts writing memoirs. Charles Arrowby, the protagonist resolves to live the life of a recluse in a house by the sea. It is there he finds his first love, Mary Hartley Fitch. Although she is nearly unidentifiable in old age, Charles becomes passionate about her, romanticizing his previous relationship with her and trying to coax her to flee with him. His incapability to distinguish between egotism and greed of his own idealistic thoughts forms the crux of the novel. About Iris Murdoch Dame Iris Murdoch was an Irish-born British author and philosopher. She was educated in some of the private progressive schools. Her works are best known for her ideas on good and evil, morality, the power of the unconscious and sexual relationships. Some of the other works penned by her are: Under the Net, The Sandcastle, A Severed Head, The Unicorn, and The Italian Girl.
