Summary of the Book A young girl is left orphaned when an epidemic kills her family and servants. Mary Lennox is taken in by her uncle. She arrives at Misselthwaite Manor, a spoilt girl who is determined to leave the place. She discovers an arched doorway into an overgrown garden, one that appears to have been locked up for a few years. Indeed, no one had tended to it since her aunt’s death. Mary begins taking care of the garden, not realizing that the manor holds a deep secret. In a dark room, hidden from the rest of the house, is her young cousin, Colin. He believes he’s an incurable valid, and his tantrums keep everyone else away from him. Mary believes that the garden holds the key to helping him, and she begins to set herself aside for the first time in her life, to help another soul.
