Sri Lanka, 1990. Maali Almeida, a war photographer who was both a gambler and a secret gay man, awoke dead in what appeared to be a heavenly passport office. He is unaware of his killer as his mutilated body sinks to the bottom of Beira Lake. The ghouls and ghosts who gather around him can attest to the depressingly long list of suspects in a period when grudges are handled by death squads, suicide bombers, and hired goons.
