The Sikhs, authored by one of the best journalists India ever saw, Khushwant Singh, is an excellent and informative book about the Sikh community. From the time of the religion’s origin and its evolution as one of the most followed religion in India, this book is a must have in your non-fiction collection. Summary of the Book In this informative book, Khushwant Singh chronicles a succinct history of Sikhism. It is one of the newest religions of the world. The book begins with the briefing on the life and times of the founder, the greatly respected and humane Guru Nanak. Khuswant then moves on to describe the dynamic influence their society evidenced by the following nine gurus of Sikhism. He explains how much of an impact they have made in modelling and emerging the religion. The importance of Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh holy book, and its supremacy to the religion are highlighted in this book. It also details on those times that saw progresses such as the setting up of Singh Sabha, the conclusive Akali agitation for governing numerous Sikh shrines and the effect of the Ghadr rebellion. Khushwant’s extensive research and unparalleled writing abilities have been brought out in this brilliant book. About Khushwant Singh Khushwant Singh was an Anglo-Indian writer, advocate, politician and journalist. A Padma Vibhushan awardee, Mr. Singh is best remembered for his humour, love of poetry and his vigourous treatment of secularism in his writings, most evident in: The Company of Women, Truth, Love and a Little Malice, With Malice towards One and All, The Mark of Vishnu and Other Stories and Delhi: A Novel. A graduate of Government College, Lahore, St. Stephen's College in Delhi and King's College London, he read for the Bar at the Inner Temple and served as a practicing lawyer for nearly fifteen years before entering journalism. He has worked with The Illustrated Weekly, The National Herald and the Hindustan Times. A prolific writer, Mr. Singh wrote till the grand old age of 99, releasing his last work The Good, The Bad and The Ridiculous a few months before his passing in March 2014.
