The Sound and the Fury is William Faulkner's classic tragedy, telling the story of the Compson family. Summary of the Book Benjy Compson is a cognitively disabled 33 year old man who is considered useless by his family. He speaks in a disjointed style, prone to chronological leaps in his narrative. With his story begins the story of the fall of the Compson family, which loses itself over a period of 30 years. Their fall, and the lives of characters as vibrant as Caddy the beautiful and rebellious, Quentin whose inner demons continues to haunt him, the harsh cynic Jason and Dilsey, their servant who is probably a child of slaves. This novel is a powerful example of Faulkner’s genius for unique narratives. About William Faulkner William Cuthbert Faulkner was an American novelist, short story writer, poet, essayist and playwright. He is best known for A Fable, The Reivers, As I Lay Dying, Light in August and Absalom, Absalom! Faulkner won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1949 and two Pulitzer Prizes. The Sound and the Fury was very loosely adapted into a film in 1959, directed by Martin Ritt and starring Yul Brynner, Joanne Woodward, Margaret Leighton, Stuart Whitman, Ethel Waters, Jack Warden and Albert Dekker.
