Beowulf is one of the most important works of Old English literature. It tells the story of Beowulf, a hero of the Geats, who comes to the aid of the Danish King Hrothgar. The Danish kingdom is under threat from Grendel, a monstrous creature who has been terrorizing the land. Beowulf defeats Grendel and later, Grendel's vengeful mother. His heroism is celebrated, and he is honored by Hrothgar.Later in the story, Beowulf returns to his homeland and eventually becomes king of the Geats. In his old age, his kingdom faces a new threat from a dragon. Beowulf fights the dragon with the help of a loyal young warrior, Wiglaf. Despite their efforts, Beowulf is mortally wounded in the battle and dies, leaving his kingdom to Wiglaf.
