The Story of My Life is the poignant autobiography of a deafblind girl, who continues to inspire as a metaphor for determination and triumph. Summary of the Book Helen was born on June 27, 1880. At 19 months of age, she contracted a disease that wrecked her vision and hearing. She steadily started to cultivate her own signs in order to interact with people at home. When the Kellers went to Alexander Graham Bell as an attempt to figure the best way to help Helen, he directed them to the Perkins Institute for the Blind. The family met Anne Sullivan there, a woman who changed Helen Keller’s life forever. The relationship Anne and Helen had was an enduring one, lasting for more than four decades. Anne taught Helen to communicate and read Braille. Helen later joined the Perkins Institute, and her strong will to communicate with others as conventionally as possible led her to learn how to speak. The rest was history. Helen spent the rest of her life giving motivational speeches. She also became a strong supporter for people with disabilities, a pacifist, a suffragist, a socialist, and a birth control supporter.
