The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Other Tales of Terror is a collection of classic stories of horror and the macabre by R. L. Stevenson. It includes the classic story of a man with a split personality, one that proves to become his ultimate doom. Summary of the Book When Mr. Utterson first heard of the diabolical Mr. Hyde, it was from his relative, Enfield, on a weekly walk. This Mr. Hyde was some manner of rogue, who didn’t care much for any sort of manners or goodwill. He trampled a young girl who merely bumped into him by accident. When Enfield had tried to stop him, he ran away. After catching him, Enfield brought Hyde back to the girl and her family, who demanded a recompense for his actions. However, the man absconded when left to procure the money, only to return with part of the money in cash and a cheque drawn on the name of Dr. Jekyll for the rest. That last bit surprised Mr. Utterson, for Dr. Jekyll was a close friend of his, and he definitely wasn’t the sort to associate with a shady individual like Hyde. However, Hyde seems to have a close relationship with the good doctor. So close, in fact, that Dr. Jekyll named him the sole benefactor in his will. What evil designs does this nefarious individual have for Dr. Jekyll? Who is he? Mr. Utterson looks into the case, but the answer he finds may shock him more than he expects it to. About R. L.
