R. L. Stevenson’s classic horror tale, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, continues to drive fear through the hearts of readers to this very day. Summary of the Book When John Utterson first hears about the diabolical Mr. Hyde, he is filled with curiosity. How can anyone be so evil as to cause bodily harm to a child just for running into him? He begins to hear more and more about Mr. Hyde, but it is only when he learns that his close associate, Dr. Jekyll, recently changed his will to name Mr. Hyde his sole inheritor that he begins to grow suspicious of the strange man. He tries to contact Dr. Jekyll who refuses to comment on Mr. Hyde. Utterson assumes that Jekyll is being blackmailed by Hyde, unable to guess that the truth is worse, far worse. When Mr. Hyde is named as a main suspect in a murder investigation, Utterson begins to worry for his friend. However, he also begins to notice that the clues point at Dr. Jekyll’s own involvement in the crime. Who is this nefarious Mr. Hyde and what is his relationship with Dr. Jekyll? About Robert Louis Stevenson R. L. Stevenson was a Scottish novelist, poet, travel writer and essayist. Some of his other famous novels are Kidnapped and Treasure Island. The above title has been adapted several times for theatre and film, most recently in 2008 starring Dougray Scott, Tom Skerritt and Krista Bridges.
