The Structure of Sociological Theory by Jonathan H. Turner is a revised and enlarged edition encompassing the most recent developments in sociological theory. Dr. Turner’s success lies in providing a brilliant analysis of the major ‘‘paradigms’’ along with his criticisms. Five main theoretical perspectives, namely, functional, conflict, exchange, interactionist and structural have been discussed in five parts comprising twenty-two chapters including the introductory chapter. Dr. Turner includes almost everything regarding sociological theory in this volume. It is an encyclopaedic gift for both teachers and students. The book surpasses all the existing texts on sociological theory. The book provides a global and balanced perspective. Turner “believes” that theory is truly international. There is a convergence of various theoretical perspectives and paradigms. Today, theory is “eclectic” and pragmatic rather than uni-directional and on-sided. Turner is Professor of Sociology at the University of California at Riverside. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California in 1965 and his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1968. He is the author of fourteen books on a variety of topics, including sociological theory, American society, social organization and ethnic relations.
