First in the series of d’Artagnan romances, The Three Musketeers tells the story of a young adventurer named d'Artagnan who aspires to join the French army as a musketeer. However, on his arrival at the musketeer headquarter in Paris, he is provoked to duel Athos, Aramis, and Porthos, the eponymous three musketeers of the story. As they prepare to duel, they are attacked by the Cardinal’s guards, after which they unite and escape. What follows is a series of adventures and daring exploits that the four men undertake to defy the ploys of Cardinal Richelieu and his agent, the vengeful Lady de Winter. The story was first published as a series in a French newspaper, Le Siècle, between March and July 1844. Set in seventeenth-century France during the reign of Louis XIII, the events of the story are largely based on facts and real historical happenings. The story is followed by two more books Twenty Years After and The Vicomte de Bragelonne, which carry forward d'Artagnan’s thrilling escapades. Alexandre Dumas was a nineteenth-century French writer. He is best-known for his character d'Artagnan, the protagonist of his most famous books The Three Musketeers and The Vicomte de Bragelonne. He wrote numerous other books on historical fiction and adventure like The Count of Monte Cristo and The Knight of Maison-Rouge. Although known primarily as a writer, Dumas was also a successful dramatist. He produced many historical romances and adapted many of his own works to plays. He was also the founder of the Theatre Historique in the 1840s. His last novel remained incomplete at the time of his death in 1870. It was later completed by a Dumas expert, Claude Schopp, and published in 2005, and in English under the title of The Last Cavalier in 2008.
