A young princess, Elizabeth, and her mentor travel to the Ottoman Capital for a chess tournament. This is done in order to protect her from the uncertainty that surrounds her. Upon reaching there, they realize that they are in for more trouble than they left behind. Summary of the Book It is the year 1546, and young princess Elizabeth of England has been facing problems. She may not be in line for the throne, but she is still seen as a threat to her older sister and brother. During this time, there comes an extraordinary invitation from the Sultan in Constantinople. He wants the finest chess players from the civilized world to pit against each other. He teacher and mentor, Roger Ascham, takes her with him when he travels to the Ottoman Capital for the tournament. However, they find that there is more danger there than there was in England. It is reported that there is a killer on the loose and the Sultan asks Ascham to investigate a murder. He and Elizabeth find out about a lot of dark secrets and terrible crimes that could scar the princess and define the queen that she will become.
