ABOUT THE BOOK:-The census have made the largest single contribution to the study of ethnology and even anthropology. Plowden as census commissioners of 1881, recommended that list of castes and occupations should be prepared for each districts and district officer asked to collect informations regarding the castes and occupations of their people. This was promptly followed by the appointment in 1885 by Risley on special duty for a period of two years to conduct an enquiry into castes and occupation througout Bengal which then considered of Behar, Odisha, Assam and Bengal. ABOUT THE AUTHOR:-Sir Herbert Hope Risley KCIE CSI (4 January 1851 – 30 September 1911) was a British ethnographer and colonial administrator, a member of the Indian Civil Service who conducted extensive studies on the tribes and castes of the Bengal Presidency. He is notable for the formal application of the caste system to the entire Hindu population of British India in the 1901 census, of which he was in charge. As an exponent of scientific racism, he used the ratio of the width of a nose to its height to divide Indians into Aryan and Dravidian races, as well as seven castes. Risley compiled the Survey's volume covering the hill districts of Hazaribagh and Lohardaga, and both the literary style and subject knowledge shown in this work were to prove beneficial to his career.
