The Turn of the Screw is a classic gothic ghost story novella by Henry James. Summary of the Book When a young woman accepts a job as a governess for two beautiful, yet strangely aloof and silent children named Miles and Flora, she has no idea what horrors she will find in the estate. She spots eerie figures just off the corner of her vision, who glare down from dark towers and dusty windows. They say nothing, but each day, they grow closer. The governess is terrified, and she realizes that the four phantoms want the children. They desire nothing but the corruption of their souls, their minds and their bodies. However, that is only the threadbare part of the problem. The children do not seem to fear these apparitions. In fact, it was almost as if they want to be possessed. This horrific tale boasts dozens of interpretations and it is largely considered to be Henry James’ best work. About Henry James Henry James was an American writer who was mostly based in Britain.
