The narrative begins with a sad letter addressed to Harold by an ex-colleague, Queenie Hennessy, who he hasn’t met in the last twenty years. Queenie has been diagnosed with cancer. She is on her deathbed and counting her final days in a hospice. Saddened by this news, Harold scribbles a note to his dying friend and walks out to a letter box nearby to post it, but he ends up having second thoughts. Harold finally decides to call the hospice where Queenie has been admitted. No one answers the phone, which makes him decide to go and meet her on foot.
