These are the stories that tell about the previous lives of the Buddha, in both human and animal form as Bodhisattva. The future Buddha may appear in them as a King, an outcast, a God, an elephant-but, in whatever form, he exhibits some virtue that the tale thereby inculcates. Through the centuries these stories have been much more than fairy tales. They were, and are, taken very seriously for their moral & spiritual teachings. Like all great myths, the stories are as much about ourselves as they are about the Lord Buddha.
