"One of the finest of the Restoration Comedies, The Way of The World depicts a society which is typical of Congreve’s time, full of “men and women of quick brains and cynical humours, who talked with the brilliance and rapidity of an accomplished swordsman.” Besides style and verbal alertness, what distinguishes this play from the others is that Congreve was able to reconcile the strong points of Restoration Comedy with a new emphasis upon ‘sententiousness’, feelings and melodrama.
