The Well of Loneliness is a lesbian novel by Radclyffe Hall. It depicts the life of Stephen Gordon, an Englishwoman from an aristocratic family whose homosexuality is apparent from an early age. Summary of the Book Stephen Gordon falls in love with Mary Llewellyn, the woman she meets while working as an ambulance driver during the First World War. But their happiness together is impaired by social isolation and dismissal, which Hall strongly believes as a feebling effect on homosexuals. Although the novel was quite harshly criticised at the time of its release, it did not fail to support sexual inversion as a natural, God-given state of being. It makes a clear assertion that inverts must also be given the right to existence. About Radclyffe Hall Marguerite Radclyffe Hall was an English poet and author best known for this title which became an inventive work in lesbian literature. She was homosexual and called herself a “congenital invert”. Some of her notable works include The Unlit Lamp, A Saturday Life, The Master of the House, Miss Ogilvy Finds Herself, and Rhymes and Rhythms.
