Before becoming an author, she had worked as a legal secretary. She is the founding member of the Romance Writers of America, and is known for being the first inductee in its Hall of Fame. She was honoured with the RWA Lifetime Achievement Award, which was later renamed as the RWA Nora Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008.
