Revolving around the character of young Arthur Kipps, a solicitor, Susan Hill’s The Woman In Black tells the story of a mysterious spectre, responsible for haunting an English town. Published in 1983, the author has followed the writing style of traditional Gothic novels in the book. Summary Of The Book The young solicitor Arthur Kipps is summoned to the small English town of Crythin Gifford to attend Mrs. Alice Drablow’s funeral. Mrs. Drablow was a reclusive widow who resided at the deserted Eel Marsh House all alone. The house, located at Nine Lives Causeway, was cut off completely from the mainland and surrounded only by sea frets and marshes during high tide. Arthur Kipps witnesses a pale faced and dark eyed woman dressed in black at the funeral. Intrigued, he goes through Mrs. Drablow’s papers at the Eel Marsh House. He uncovers some terrifying truths, that tell of the hauntings of the Woman In Black. These hauntings are accompanied by certain chilling events and unexplained noises. The young solicitor looks for answers in Crythin Gifford , only to find people reluctant on letting any information out on Mrs. Drablow. Further investigations lead Kipps to learn certain spine chilling truths about the past of Mrs. Drablow, Eel Marsh House, and the Woman In Black. The novel was adapted into a stage play as well as a television drama in 1989. A movie adaptation was made in 2012, which starred Daniel Radcliffe, known for his lead roles in the Harry Potter series of movies.
