Frank Baum. Summary of the Book Dorothy and Toto aren’t in Kansas anymore. A powerful tornado ripped their house from its foundation and set them flying, setting them down in a strange land. To Dorothy’s chagrin, the house lands right atop an evil witch, the Wicked Witch of the East. However, the witch had been tyrannizing the locals, the little people called the Munchkins. The Munchkins rejoice at her defeat and they tell Dorothy that she’s their saviour. To educate Dorothy of what she’s achieved, the Good Witch of the North appears, telling Dorothy to take the Wicked Witch’s magic ruby slippers. Dorothy slips them on and invokes the wrath of the dead witch’s sister: the Wicked Witch of the West. However, Dorothy wants none of this embargo and only desires to return home. But she isn’t in Kansas, she is very, very far from it. This is the land called Oz, and to return home, she needs the help of a very powerful wizard, the Wizard of Oz.
