The Yellow Emperor’s Cure written by Kunal Basu is about the struggle of a rich Portugese surgeon, Antonio Mario, who is desperately seeking a cure for his father’s syphilis, and he travels to China to find the same. The story is set in the late 19th and early 20th centuries during the troubled times of the Boxer rebellion. He learns about traditional Chinese medicines, though some of the cures seem bizarre to him and he also finds the first love of his life, Fumi, in China. This leads him to question all that he had been taught till then. During a siege of the Summer Palace, the lovers get separated, leaving Antonio in a quandary between staying in war-torn China or leaving for Portugal and leaving his first love. About the Author Kunal Basu, born in Kolkata in India on the May 4, 1956, to Communist parents, was introduced to books at a very early age. He is also the acclaimed author of many best sellers like The Japanese Wife, The Opium Clerk, The Miniaturist, and The Racists. He went on to study in the United States, and has worked in the Canadian University of McGill, and Indian Institute of Technology, Kolkota. At present, Basu is a Reader at Oxford University.
