John Lawton’s Then We Take Berlin is a historical novel set in the 1960s. Summary of the Book In his youth, John Holderness learns how to break into houses from his grandfather during World War II, in Stepney, East London. Women know John as “Wilderness”, and his reputation as a cat burglar precedes him. He is recruited by MI5 as their very own resident cat burglar, and he is plunged into Berlin. The black market is in its highest boom after the war and John is constantly put into trouble by its schemes. When he receives an unusual request in 1963 to smuggle someone out of East German, under the Berlin Wall, he returns, not knowing that this mission might be the ultimate challenge, one that he should not have accepted. About John Lawton John Lawton is an English writer, novelist, TV producer and director. He is known for his espionage and WW2 thrillers. Some of his other books are Black Out, Old Flames and A Little White Death.
