A history of Thuggee cannot be written independently of the history of British rule in India, yet by reading colonial records against the grain and relying on the broadest range of sources available, it is nevertheless possible to overcome some of the difficulties associated with the study of crime in a colonial context. Thuggee as a social phenomenon-as less than the sacrificial cult constructed by the British, yet more than the colonial phantasmagoria counter posited by post-colonial scholars.
