The novel is set during the First Anglo-Afghan War (1839-1842), a conflict between the British East India Company and the Emirate of Afghanistan. The story follows the adventures of a young British protagonist, who is sent to the Afghan frontier to take part in the military campaign.The main character is a boy named Hugh Wilton, who becomes involved in the conflict due to his father's position in the British Army. Hugh’s journey begins when he is sent to join the British forces stationed in India. From there, he participates in the campaign that leads to the capture of Herat and the subsequent advance towards Cabul (Kabul).
